A New Year

Blog Photo - New Year's Poem Birthday Cake

We measure a year in months and milestones

Birthdays and other anniversaries

The goals achieved, honours received

And various victories.

Blog Photo - New Year's Poem Sunset

These things we dream of, yearn for, live towards

The dates forecast in calendars

And marked off by celebrations

Of our lives.

aunt Rose with her son, great niece, and great-great niece

I wish you all that and more.

But when I wish you a happy new year

I know there may also be losses

And challenges and dirty dishes

Because this is life.

And so I wish you:

Nature, The Boss Lady

Some gardeners will

Their flowers place

According to their “measure”

Blog Photo - Garden - Low flowers in front of tulips

Tall ones in back

Short ones in front

‘Tis best for viewing pleasure

 *

I wish I could

Claim this is what

Takes place in my own garden

*

But that would be

A lie from me

I’d have to beg your “pardon”

Blog Photo - Garden short flowers in front forget-me-nots

It started out

In this way, yes

All was in perfect order

Blog Photo - Garden short plants

But I forgot

To see what’s what

And Nature changed the border

Blog Photo - Garden Tall Flowers Everywhere

So now the tall ones

Bloom in front

While short ones hide behind them

Blog Photo - Garden Tall flowers in front

And if I want

To see most flow’rs

I have to go and find them.

Our Lady Spring

My Lady Spring, I must confess

Your absence causes great distress

Why does it take so long for thee

To come back here and stay with me?

Mallard on Wing
Mallard on Wing

The sun shines brightly on the land

But winter makes its own last stand

At least I thought it was the last

Till winter whispered “not so fast!”

Blog Photo - Blooming rhubarb

The tips of future tulip flowers

Came out expecting springtime showers

Then came a blast of wicked cold

And tulip shrank back in its fold.

Blog Photo - Alium Bloom

Our Lady Spring, we need you so

Oh Lady Spring, where did you go?

Come back, relieve our suffering

And I will make this offering

Spring Garden - Pink Bleeding Heart

No more complaints of rain and fog

No more complaints that we can’t jog

We’ll gladly tolerate the bugs

We’ll stand outside and give them hugs

Spring Garden - Hyacinths

Oh gosh, I just read what I wrote

I take it back, that buggy quote

I hate mosquitoes, really do

And grubs and wasps and deer-flies too

Blog Photo - Daffodil white

But if you come, my Lady Spring

Along with blooms and birds on wing

I’ll try my best to gracious be

About the things that do bug me

Birdhouse by Jean Long

And I shall greet you in the rain

And sing for you a spring refrain

And take the bad along with good

And walk along the cherry wood

Mature Shrubs in Bloom

Oh, Lady Spring, come back to me

So I can stroll my garden free

Of winter coat and freezing cold

While your great beauty I behold.

RETURN OF THE EXILE

Home now to that place of your youth

The beautiful land whose  brutal truth

You fled.

Memory – that minefield – would not rest

But love and fame were in the West

You thrived.

Blog Photo - Pink Peony

The news came on and you grew  still

The anger bubbled; it made you ill

So silent.

But now to homeland you’ve returned

I pray you’ll cope, and that you’ve learned

To forgive.

Bloodroot Flower
Bloodroot Flower

I wish you peace, and even joy

In that place where you were that boy

Long ago.

Permit yourself to laugh and play

To tuck the anger back away

For now.

Crocus in Spring
Crocus in Spring

Permit yourself to have some hope

Allow yourself the needed scope

To dream.

That land you love may come to be

A place you would have loved to see

Take shape

And though that seems so far away

So distant from this present day

Take heart

Now feel the sun upon your face

The rhythm, light, and sense of place

Once home.
